The Heart Club program of the local government unit of Pagbilao celebrated its first anniversary, February 21, 2017 at the Sentrong Pangkabuhayan Auditorium, with Mayor Shierre Ann Portes-Palicpic, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Nathaniel Merene and Councilor Joahnnes Mercado gracing the activity.
The program Heart Club, which provides medical care for people with heart ailment, was established a year ago by the LGU under the supervision of Mayor Palicpic. Its counterpart program, Sweet Club, which serves diabetic patients, was founded in 2013 during Mayor Palicpic’s first term as municipal mayor. Because complication in the heart is one of the factors that can cause diabetes to a person, accordingly, Heart Club program was born. Together, the two programs are called “Sweetheart Club,” a term coined by Mayor Palicpic.
In her message, the multi-awarded mayor explained why the MHO gives necessary medicines to the members every other Tuesday, and could not do it on a monthly basis. This is so as the Municipal Health Office (MHO) can monitor the members’ health progress more regularly than just once a month. Additionally, the LGU is targeting to add 500 more members to the Club this year, expecting to serve 1000 or more persons with heart illness.
Considered as the most active and most functional Heart Club in Quezon Province, the program started with 285 members. According to the MHO, as of today, the program is serving 585 members, comprising of senior citizens, middle-aged individuals and children.
