Adhering to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)’s mandate that each of the country’s 42,036 barangays must conduct a Barangay Assembly Day, Brgy. Daungan in Pagbilao held such, March 25, 2017, while other barangays conducted the same a week before.
Section 397 of Republic Act No. 7160 or the Local Government Code (LGC) requires the conduct of Barangay Assembly Day. This is so as barangay officials can discuss with the residents various concerns, improvements, activities and projects in their community. The LGC also declares that the Barangay Assembly should be attended by individuals who are citizens of the Philippines, residents of the barangay for six months or so, at least 15 years old, and accordingly listed as members of the barangay assembly.
During the nationwide activity, Pagbilao Mayor Shierre Ann Portes-Palicpic headed off to Brgy. Daungan, one of the barangays in the poblacion area, to personally witness the gathering. Pambayang Liga ng mga Barangay (PLB) President and Brgy. Daungan Captain, Coun. Maria Assumpta Ariate, tackled the developments and other significant matters concerning Pagbilao’s 27 barangays. Meanwhile, other barangays in Pagbilao chose to hold their Assembly a week before March 25.
“Sulong Barangay Kontra Droga, Krimen at Katiwalian: Makialam! Makilahok! Makiisa!” is the theme of the Barangay Assembly Day for the first semester of 2017. A memorandum circular issued by the DILG twice a year directs that all barangays should hold a Barangay Assembly every last Saturday of March and second Sunday of October.
