Embracing Quezon’s First 1000 Days of Life (Q1K) Program, Pagbilao LGU officials and heads composing of Mayor Shierre Ann Portes-Palicpic; Sangguniang Bayan Health and Sanitation Committee Chair, Coun. Jeffrey Tiñana; Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Nathaniel Merene; Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer, Emerita Madla with staff Jane Luce; Municipal Dentist, Dr. Mariam Merluza; Municipal Administrator, Engr. Ian Palicpic; and Municipal Agriculturist (OIC), Leonora Melendrez joined the 2017 Q1K Summit, March 22-24, 2017 at Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City, Cavite.
During the three-day summit, Quezon Governor David Suarez; Department of Health Undersecretary and Administrative, Finance and Procurement Officer, Achilles Gerard Bravo; and a representative of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) signed the Memorandum of Agreement on the expansion and better provision of medical services to mothers and their baby.
The Q1K program, started in 2014 and formally launched in 2015, is geared towards the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates basically arising from risky pregnancy and delivery. It provides free regular pre-natal check-ups, ultrasound services, laboratory tests, vaccines and vitamins for mothers and babies, taking good care of their health within 1,000 days until the babies reach the age of two years. Additionally, the program is implemented with a firm desire to improve the quality of life of Quezonian mothers and babies through intensifying health care programs and conduction of campaigns and seminars.
The Q1K program is considered to be a success, having served 39 municipalities and two cities in the Province since its launching. The Quezon Government is currently targeting to place a fund amounting to 40 million pesos for the construction of “halfway homes” that will house pregnant mothers until their delivery.
The Department of Health and the National Nutrition Council (NCC) saw the contribution of the Q1K program under the guidance of Gov. Suarez in the Province’s health sector, and recognized it as “first champion” of the 1,000 days health scheme.
